  • Oxbelly (Greece) Fiction— fully funded retreat for emerging novel & short-story writers; the 2026 round has closed, so watch for the next call (~January). oxbelly.com
  • Bogliasco Foundation (Italy) All genres— funded month-long fellowship (literature among the disciplines) for established writers; travel not covered. Next cycle usually opens for an early-year deadline. bfny.org
  • Bellagio Center / Rockefeller (Italy) All genres— funded four-week residency, but for projects advancing human well-being or social impact — a narrower fit. Annual early-year call. rockefellerfoundation.org

Major awards you can't apply to directly — they come by confidential nomination. Worth knowing they exist.

  • Whiting Award — $50,000 for emerging writers across genres, including nonfiction.
  • United States Artists Fellowships — $50,000 unrestricted, across disciplines.
