📝 THE FOUNTAIN FLOW 📝
October 21, 2025 Edition
Dear Writer,
Here's something we've noticed after years of working with writers on their query letters: the queries that get responses aren't necessarily the most fascinating or cleverly written. They're the ones that radiate a quiet confidence—an energetic signature that says "I know the value of what I'm offering."
You can't fake that energy. Agents, like all of us, have finely tuned nervous systems that pick up on the difference between genuine creative authority and overeager performance. They can feel it in your word choice, your tone, even in how you structure your bio.
So how do you cultivate authentic confidence when you're facing one of the most vulnerable moments in your writing life?
✨ Find Your Dream Agent Through Emotional Clarity
Back in May, we held a members-only class that completely changed how our writers think about querying. We didn't focus on formulas or one-size-fits-all templates. Instead, we went straight to what actually matters—emotional clarity, nervous system safety, and getting really honest about what you want from an agent relationship.
We shared actual query letters from our students and clients that led to agent offers and book deals. We talked about what writers genuinely want from their agents—beyond just "someone to sell my book." And we did this exercise that our members are still talking about...
We looked at query language side by side to examine tone and authority. One writer's version started like this: "I would be so grateful if you would consider my memoir." We revised this to: "My memoir brings a fresh perspective to your strong list of women's stories." Same book, completely different energy. One tone positions you as needy while the other shows you as a professional who knows what they're bringing to the table.
Want to watch the whole class? The recording is free for all Fountain members, along with our corresponding Ideal Agent Clearing—a guided meditation that helps you actually embody partnership energy before you write your query. (Because your nervous system needs to believe it first.)
Not a member yet? It's $33/month to access this meetup, all of our other recorded monthly classes, our library of Clearings and the kind of support that changes how you see yourself as a writer. Join The Fountain →
đź’Ś Try This: Write Your Soul Letter
Forget query letters for a second. Try this exercise from the class instead:
Write a soul letter to your ideal agent. Not polished. Not professional. Just raw, honest, unguarded. Write like you already have this agent and you're telling them exactly what you need from this relationship.
Get specific. Get sensory. "I want someone who lights up when they talk about dark literary fiction. Someone who gets why I spent three months rewriting that one chapter about grief. Someone who will fight for my weird book when editors say it's too quiet."
You'll never send this letter. But something magic happens when you write it—you start to understand what you're actually looking for. This kind of clarity changes everything about how you approach your real query.
🎯 Want to Go Deeper?
Our self-paced course 10 Steps to Your Dream Agent: The Confident Query Guide ($99) takes everything from that May class and goes even deeper. You get the full step-by-step process, two Clearings (including a 30-day confidence track you listen to daily), real query examples, and more.
Make the shift from "please pick me" energy to "here's what I'm offering."

đź’« What We Know
You've spent months (probably years) on your book. You know every character's backstory, every subplot, every word you agonized over at 2am. You understand your book's value.
The problem isn't your book. It's that somewhere along the way, we absorbed this idea that agents are doing us a huge favor by even reading our queries. But that's backwards. This is a business partnership. Your success becomes their success. They need you as much as you need them.
Good agents—the ones you actually want—they're looking for colleagues. They want writers who understand their worth and can articulate it clearly.
So before you send another query, consider: are you writing from scarcity or from knowing what you bring to the table?
Your dream agent is out there, looking for exactly what you write.
